While new additions to the cast for season 5 of “Dexter” were announced months before the season kicked off, that’s not to say fans are not in for some major surprises with each new episode.

The second episode of the latest season, which aired the other night, introduced fans with yet another serial killer, though the nature of his relationship with Dexter has not been fully explained.

Shawn Hatosy, known to fans mostly for good cop roles on various shows, is Boyd Fowler in “Dexter,” a “creepy sanitation guy” who also happens to moonlight as a serial killer.

Speaking with TV Guide just recently (as cited by Digital Spy), Hatosy says the offer to be on “Dexter” and play such a different character came as a much welcome change.

“I was dying to do it. I enjoy doing all that [cop work], but to kind of stretch the muscles a little bit and step outside that world was exciting,” the actor explains.

And he’s doing quite some stretching of those muscles on “Dexter,” one might as well add.

As noted above, Boyd works for the sanitation department, a job he finds quite “exciting,” the actor playing him explains.

“It’s those kind of unusual things that the writers give you that you just kind of go with and accept. There's no reservation – you just kind of jump in,” Hatosy says.

“There’s a youthful innocence to his joy in his work, and I think it’s just fascinating,” the actor adds, thus offering fans a bit more details on what may be in store next.

Speaking of fans, those thinking that Boyd will be gone next thing tomorrow just like that (speaking figuratively, of course) should reconsider because Hatosy speaks of a “rounded” character, which hints at a long life on the popular show.

“The writers on that show – they’re so clever. They gave me a character that is one of the more complex characters that I’ve ever read, but human at the same time. The scripts are so thought-out,” Hatosy says.

“It raises the stakes... Inside the madness of the world they have created, there’s something about it that rings true and honest. Even with the darkness, there’s the underlying humor that comes out,” the actor adds.
