New Security Flaw for Windows Vista

PNRP, this time

Microsoft is about to patent a new solving method for security flaws.

What do we have here? Oh, it's a damaged Windows component. No problem, we'll just have to block it or get rid of it, even better.

The first time Windows applied this strategy was 2 weeks ago, when F-Secure had discovered the first Windows Vista virus family. Known as the Danom group, they were designed especially for MSH, or Microsoft Command Shell, a replacement for command.com or cmd.exe.

Microsoft stated as a vehement protest
that we shouldn't take it all that seriously, because MSH is not even a part in the Windows Vista final version.

This week-end brought new reports, on another Windows Vista security flow. Two months ago, Microsoft announced that a new P2P program is in progress. It should function according to all laws and replace the P2P illegal technologies. PNRP ( Peer Name Resolution Protocol) is already a part of Windows Vista, but that's not a problem. The issue here is that PNRP activates in standard mode.

So, most of the beta users found themselves having to face a problem: the Windows Vista test computer allows Internet traffic. This is not only a violation of Microsoft's own security terms, but also a exploit source.

What was Microsoft's response? Very simple."The facility does not activate on standard mode in Windows Vista final version.", said Greg Sullivan, Windows Product Manager. And regarding the beta testers, they should manage to cancel PNRP on their own, at this point.

It's a fact that a beta-version has its bugs, but still, don't you think there are too many serious problems for such a short Windows Vista testing period?

This week, Softpedia News wants to know your opinion on the first beta of Windows Vista. Do you think it comes close to what users want or do you think that Microsoft will have problems with its latest operating system? Express your opinion in the Softpedia News Poll.
