Entire project could spend about an year in the making

Following the recent attacks against Canada’s National Research Council (NRC), the agency has started work on deploying a more secure infrastructure for its computer systems.

The project is estimated to be completed in about one year, and in the meantime, every possible action is being taken in order to minimize disruptions.

The Government of Canada has detected and confirmed an intrusion on the network of the NRC, and the necessary step that had to be taken in order to avoid loss of information was to shut down the systems.

However, after conducting an investigation, NRC and its security partners managed to address the security breach and protect its information holdings.

The cyber-attack has been identified to originate from China, and according to a statement from the Chief Information Officer (CIO) for the Government of Canada, behind the operation was “a highly sophisticated Chinese state-sponsored actor.”

In a statement published yesterday, the CIO said that “while the National Research Council's networks do not currently operate within the broader Government of Canada network, since the detection and confirmation of the cyber intrusion, the National Research Council's networks have been isolated from the broader Government of Canada network as a precautionary measure.”
