As you have been informed by some of our previous articles, at the FPD International 2008 in Japan, the most important manufacturers of various display solutions gathered in order to provide some insight on what they're preparing for the future. Quite obviously, Samsung was one of the biggest makers to exhibit its creations, and, among the highly innovative products showcased in its booth, there was also a prototype plasma display that delivers a very impressive resolution, of 4,096 x 2,160 pixels, with the diagonal size being surprisingly large as well.

Thus, as Takuya Otani from Nikkei Electronics (TechOn) informs us, the 63-inch plasma display showcased by Samsung was able to attain that amazing resolution due to some reductions in pixel size down to 0.339 x 0.363mm. These reductions were made possible by the slimming down of the barrier rib structure, accompanied by serious modifications brought to the transparent electrode and the bus electrode.

Samsung is not the first company to tackle the issue of “above-HDTV” resolutions, but it's the first to come up with a product that provides a large-enough display. Previously, Pioneer and NHK experimented with PDPs featuring very small pixel sizes, but the results were simple prototypes, with little or no practical application.

While consumer-grade uses for such a PDP don't even exist yet (I mean, we're most likely at least five to ten years away from the first commercial, large-scale implementations of SuperVision technology, as 4,096 x 2,160 pixel broadcasting is also known as), it's interesting to see that Samsung is already thinking way ahead in the future and planning its moves. This is probably one of the reasons why it has managed to keep itself on the top position on the display solutions' market for so long.
