Microsoft has released an updated version of a collection of solutions designed to allow developers to bridge applications built with the next iteration of .NET libraries with the company’s data platform. A new Community Technology Preview of SQL Server Modeling is currently available via the Microsoft Download Center. This is in fact the second release of the November 2009 CTP of what was previously called codename “Oslo.”

“SQL Server Modeling is a set of future technologies that provide significant productivity gains across the lifecycle of .NET applications by enabling developers, architects, and IT professionals to work together more effectively with SQL Server at the center of the application lifecycle,” Microsoft explained.

The re-release of the November 2009 CTP of SQL Server Modeling CTP Nov 2009 Release 2 is offered for developers that are testing the most recent development milestone of Visual Studio and .NET Framework. In February, Microsoft launched Visual Studio 2010 Release Candidate and .NET Framework 4 RC, which continue to be up for grabs at the time of writing this article.

In fact, .NET Framework 4 RC and Visual Studio 2010 RC are among the technologies that testers will need in order to run SQL Server Modeling CTP - Nov 2009 Release 2. More specifically .NET 4 RC is necessary for the installation of the CTP, while VS2010 RC is a requirement for M Tools integration.

“The components of the SQL Server Modeling CTP are: ‘M’ is a highly productive, developer friendly, textual language for defining schemas, queries, values, functions and DSLs for SQL Server databases. ‘Quadrant’ is a customizable tool for interacting with large datasets stored in SQL Server databases. SQL Server Modeling Services (formerly the ‘Oslo’ Repository) is a SQL Server role for the secure sharing of models between applications and systems,” Microsoft stated.
