A new version of the redsn0w jailbreak tool for iOS 4.3.1 has been released. The iPhone Dev Team notes that the 0.9.6rc11 includes minor fixes for the various Settings options posed by redns0w, and can now enable boot animations.

Supporting iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 GSM, iPad 1, iPod touch 3rd-generation, iPod touch 4th-generation, and Apple TV 2G, redsn0w 0.9.6rc11 is freely available for download for both Mac and Windows users.

The tool uses an 4.3.1 untether exploit courtesy of German security researcher, Stefan Esser, which the iPhone Dev Team mentioned in a blog post.

“Stefan has a long history of vulnerability research, and ironically his first contribution to the iPhone jailbreak community was improved security — last year he beat Apple to the punch and implemented ASLR for jailbroken iPhones with his ‘antid0te’ framework,” the group wrote last week.

“We’re happy to see that Stefan then turned his iPhone attention over to an untethered jailbreak exploit!”

Those relying on an ultrasn0w unlock are advised to stay away from redsn0w, should they wish to employ the tool for updating to Apple’s latest firmware.

Instead, unlockers are encouraged by the iPhone Dev Team to use PwnageTool, so that they can preserve their baseband.

PwnageTool 4.3 uses the same exploit as redsn0w but, unlike the latter, PwnageTool works on Mac OS X only.

Sn0wbreeze is also an option, for those using a Windows PC to jailbreak.

If you choose to download and install jailbreak tools, you will do so at your own risk. Unlocking / jailbreaking your iPhone / iPod touch / iPad / Apple TV may violate your warranty or the EULA with Apple and / or your cellular-service provider.
