Profile Spy scams back on Facebook
Enlarge picture
A new Facebook scam lures users into signing up for premium mobile services and spamming their friends by promising to show a list of profile visitors. It even instructs users to disable ad-blocking programs.

It all starts with a spam message received from one of the victims, which reads “OMG OMG OMG... I can't believe this actually works! Now you really can see who views your profile!!! WOAH ? --> [URL]” Following the included link takes users to a site on an external domain called ilikefacebook.in.

The site displays fake Facebook-style notifications claiming to be example of alerts users will receive when someone views their profile. The logo for a well-known rogue Facebook app called Profile Spy is also shown on the page.

Users are also told that in order to sign-up for the Profile Spy application they need to like and share the page. At the time of writing this article around 29,000 users clicked the “Like” button and 27,000 the “Share” one. Posting the spam message manually in five different places on Facebook is also allegedly required.

Finally, after the victims have heavily spammed their profile with messages promoting this scam, they are taken to a window claiming that they also need to take a survey. “Then the 'verification' launches you into one of those endless surveys (you get a choice of six) the point of which is to collect your cell phone number so you can be billed $9.99 per month,” Tom Kelchner, a security researcher at Sunbelt Software, who analyzed the attack, warns.

People should be aware that there is no feature on Facebook which allows viewing profile visitors; and considering the privacy implications of such functionality, it will probably never be allowed. Therefore, any message or application that claims otherwise is most definitely a scam.

Hello. "This" being what? The spam messages? The rogue application? The premium mobile service?

If you fell victim to this scam, you can Unlike the page, delete the shared message by hovering the mouse over it on your wall and clicking the X in the top-right corner.

Go to Account > Application Settings, see if you have the Profile Spy or some other suspicious looking application listed there and remove it from the list.

If you went further and took the surveys and provided your personal info, mobile phone number and/or other financial details, things get more complicated.

For starters, check your mobile phone bill and see if you have any unauthorized charges and contact your service provider to cancel the subscription to the rogue premium service.

It doesn't seem to be quite that simple. I can't unlike it because the page has been blocked by facebook. Is there any other way to get it off my list of likes?

Comment #5.3 by: Johns on 18 Dec 2010, 08:58 GMT

No, but there are 3 options. Go to your settings and disable it, change your password (I did that because I became a victim) or de-activate your account, then re-activate it. Do either one of them, they all work.

I clicked on none of these things. This is hidden in my profile under Arts and Entertainment and it won't let me edit my profile to delete it. It is causing malicious script and slowing down my computer. I have made facebook aware of the problems and thus far they are doing nothing.

If I give my number and they send me a code do they bill me monthly even though I send stop immediately??

Comment #20 by: Chris on 29 Jun 2012, 09:56 UTC reply to this comment

Tom Kelchner should have done his research. The point of the survey is not at all to collect the users phone number. The person promoting the app gets paid when someone fills out a survey. They are creating a 'lead' for another company not related to the app owners.

Good to know

It is running rampant on Facebook again using an image hosted at imgur at http://i.imgur.com/96ZgX.jpg (recently reported) and using facebook profiles under the name of Profile Spy and App names such as http://apps.facebook.com/gfhgtdrytryrh/

NOT to be trusted! Posts to your page and gets your friends to also try it out and everyone who does this fills out a survey which makes the scammer money.

The resulting profiles that have looked at your page are faked and no names are given. Just numbers.

I am fed up of being approached by Profile Spy! I do not class my family or friends/friends as stalkers for visiting my site, I know that I can adjust my settings to prevent unwanted access/viewers and can block anyone. Can Facebook stop these so called spies? I am upset that someone I am in contact with can give away my details to such an App without my consent just so they can see if they have stalkers when they can adjust their settings instead.
