The developers working on Planetside 2 at Sony Online Entertainment have released a new video for the upcoming shooter-based MMO in order to detail how the ground assault, the main mechanic of the game, will work.

The video features a number of Terran Republic soldiers assaulting a strengthened position under heavy fire, using skills and abilities to overcome the defenders.

The game also allows players to battle in the skies of the planet of Auraxis and vehicles will also be provided for those who want more firepower and protection.

Planetside 2 will use a free-to-play system, allowing players to access the core game experience without paying anything, with a cash shop included, selling only items that gamers can also access through normal gameplay and some exclusive cosmetic options.

SOE hopes that Planetside 2 will build on the popularity of the first MMO FPS and attract players who are dissatisfied with the role-playing mechanics of most online titles.

The MMO is set to arrive exclusively on the PC at some point during 2012.
