Since March this year, when confirmation finally came that Marvel had settled on a star for Captain America in “Captain America: The First Avenger,” fans have been dying to see Chris Evans in full costume.

Now, with the latest issue of Entertainment Weekly, they have the chance to do just that – and not only, since a shot of his ripped pecs is also included, confirming that the actor has seriously bulked up for the part.

As fans must know, Chris has always been in excellent shape – which was also more than obvious in “Fantastic Four,” where he played Johnny Storm, aka the Human Torch – but he seems to have put in extra effort for “Captain America.”

Before one gets to the shirtless shot though, there’s the cover of EW, with Evans looking intently into the camera, in full Captain America costume – even equipped with shield.

This marks the first time that fans get to see him as the beloved superhero and, while many are already saying on dedicated forums he has what it takes to make the role work for him, there still are some left unconvinced.

As they see it, Evans, while clearly talented, has a tongue-in-cheek style and approach that will probably make him unsuitable for Captain America.

Of course, whether they’re accurate in what they’re saying, we’ll find out when the movie arrives. It seems Evans too feared this kind of reaction from the fanbase, from what he says in the accompanying EW interview.

“At the time, I remember telling a buddy of mine, ‘If the movie bombs, I’m [expletive]-ed. If the movie hits, I’m [expletive]-ed!’” Evan reveals.

Because of this, when he was initially offered the part, he turned it down. It took a lot of convincing on Marvel’s part to get him to say yes – the fourth time they asked him.

“I was just scared. I realized my whole decision making process was fear based, and you never want to make a decision out of fear,” the actor says of why he eventually accepted the part.

Now, he has no regrets and is actually eager for the film to arrive in theaters. “I can’t believe was almost too chicken to play Captain America,” he adds.

“Captain America: The First Avenger” is scheduled for release in theaters on July 22, 2011.
