A 1-year-old child was accidentally shot in a neighborhood in New Orleans and police are looking for two suspects in the shooting.

According to NBC News, Londyn Samuels was in the care of her 18-year-old nanny. The latter incurred a gunshot wound to her torso and she was hospitalized with critical injuries. Reports say that she will be surviving the attack.

"She said, 'Kee, we got shot — me and Londyn.' In the back of my head, this is a bad dream I haven't woken up from yet," the girl's father, 20-year-old Keion Reed, recalls getting a call from the nanny.

Londyn was shot in the chest and died on the spot. She was being carried in the nanny's arms to the family home, after returning from the park.

"I'm hurt. [...] Because that was my baby," the baby's mother, 22-year-old Andrea Samuels, adds.

Two men were seen running away from the scene. Witnesses described that they had not been involved in a shooting on the street.

Police Superintendent Ronal Serpas has held a press conference encouraging neighbors to come forward with tips about the shooters' identities.

"What kind of a man would shoot at a woman holding a child? Please, if you know anything, we know this happened at a time during the evening when people were one the street, say something, you can call CrimeStoppers, you don't have to give your name.

"This is a time when the people and city of New Orleans have to rally together and say this is unacceptable. That's not the kind of person you want to protect," he urges the public.

CrimeStoppers is offering a $5,000 (€3,785) reward for clues about the names of the shooters, but they have only received a tip until now.

"We think the neighborhood knows who they are," Serpas says.
