Freeing up space on your desktop while sounding better

Many think that in the world of desktop speakers there isn't too much to be done and most of the possible solutions have already been offered. Despite such a rather blunt thought, it looks like Logitech couldn't care less: and the proof has just been announced, in the body of the USB omnidirectional speakers codenamed Z5.

The Logitech Z5 speakers are a very neat way to bring to life the audio content of your favorite media, whether we're thinking about movies, Internet websites, music, online radio or even presentations.

Destined to be placed on your tabletop, the Logitech Z5 are two miniature towers with a cloth grille surrounding them completely and somehow underlining their omnidirectional attribute. Unfortunately, Logitech has been way too silent in terms of technical specifications: nobody (but Logitech itself) seems to know anything regarding what kind of drivers power up the Z5 system, its frequency response, power rating and so on. Hopefully, as it is due to start shipping any day now, this data will also be present.

One noticeable and very neat thing about the Logitech Z5 is its small footprint and unobtrusive design: these speakers can be effortlessly accommodated in your bedroom, home office or on your desk at work. They'll eat up minimal space and by all means they will not mean another source of messed up, cluttered wires, because they come with only two cables: the first one is the USB connection used to deliver the audio data and the power needed to make this system work, while the second one is the audio link between the two units.

The power via USB thingie is quite cool because this means no heavy transformers and, even more, no power brick – everything is light and can be easily moved from place to place. Even more, the Z5 audio system comes with a very good-looking wireless remote control, granting you access to the basic playback and volume functions, and can be configured to automatically launch your preferred application: iTunes, Windows Media Player or your audio player of choice, running either Windows or Mac.

As far as the sonic performance is concerned, the guys from Ubergizmo said that they were rather satisfied, especially as we're talking about common USB speakers. Now indeed, anyone expecting high-grade listening from this system had better give up such thoughts; the Logitech Z5 MSRP is just under $100, which makes its street price lower and therefore becoming truly affordable, especially for those of you willing to make a change in your desktop speakers experience.

We are just a few, but there are many of you, Softpedia users, out there. That's why we thought it would be a good idea to create an email address for you to help us a little in finding gadgets we missed. Interesting links are bound to be posted with recognition going mainly to those who submit. The address is .
