Following the RTM of Visual Studio 2010 and .NET Framework 4 earlier this month, Microsoft has started offering the new versions of its development platform and tools to more testers, in additional languages, on top of the original English release. On April 27th, Microsoft launched the first three localized versions of Visual Studio 2010 RTM and .NET Framework 4 RTM for download. German, French and Japanese developers can now access both offerings in their native languages via MSDN or the Microsoft Download Center

S. Somasegar, senior vice president, Developer Division, indicates that this is just the first wave of downloads with new Visual Studio 2010 and .NET Framework 4 localized versions. However, because of the extent of the effort, additional releases won’t be produced overnight. Every localized version of Visual Studio and the .NET Framework implies translating over a million words in the graphical user interface, as well as approximately 20 million words of documentation. No easy task, not even for Microsoft.

This is why the upcoming localized versions of .NET Framework 4 will only be offered in May 2010. Come next month, users in Europe will be able to download the Spanish, Italian and Russian versions of Visual Studio 2010 and .NET Framework 4. The following month, namely in June 2010, Microsoft will deliver the new development offerings in Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese and Korean.

“Through a close partnership with community and various universities around the world, we will also release free language packs for the following languages this summer: Czech, Polish, Turkish, and Brazilian Portuguese. These language packs switch your English Visual Studio Professional user interface into any of these languages and will have a majority of the user interface localized,” Somasegar added.
