They can hold up to 108 TB and reach 410 MB/s speed

Network-attached storage devices may not be used much in large enterprise server systems, but that doesn't mean there aren't suitable substitutes for server blades anyway. In fact, Synology has just launched a couple.

We can't really argue that blade servers are the most useful when you want to cram a lot of processing and storage in a small space.

But small or medium businesses just don't need the sort of resources that larger corporations require. That's where NAS devices come in.

The two new models from Synology provide two advantages over the usual brood: top capacity per HDD of 6 TB and high performance.

The Synology DS1515+ and DS1815+

The DS1515+ and DS1815+ have product pages already, but they haven't been given prices or availability details as of yet.

Not that it matters much for such things, at least the prices don't. You'll end up spending a lot more money on the HDDs themselves after all.

The Synology DS1515+ has five drive bays, and thus, a total capacity limit of 30 TB, since each HDD can have 6 TB on its own.

This is a fair bit more than the 4 TB possible on most NAS units on the market right now, though firmware updates for them may change this in the future.

The top transfer speed over Gigebit LAN (when all four ports are used in Link Aggregation Mode) is of 390 MB/s. This means that doc access and video streaming requests, and everything in between, can easily be accomplished for a whole bunch of users at once.

The 2.4 GHz quad-core Intel Atom C2000 CPU definitely pulls its weight, and the 6 GB of RAM are a good addition as well.

The DS1815+ is similar except for the top capacity of 48 TB and the write speed of up to 410 MB/s. Both NAS products have read speeds of 450 MB/s and can be daisy-chained, in a sense, for 90 TB and 108 TB total capacity, respectively.

Synology High Availability

This technology uses multiple LAN ports to ensure uptime and resilience with SSD read/write cache support. Basically, you can set up SSD caching configurations, for optimum performance and data retention.

"SMBs nowadays need a storage solution that is versatile and powerful at the same time; something that can fulfil diverse tasks with utmost reliability," said Rosiel Lee, senior sales and marketing manager at Synology. "DS1515+ and DS1815+ are built for exactly such purposes."
