More violence, more fatalities

Warner Bros. has announced it is creating a new Mortal Kombat videogame, which will aim for a return to the roots of the franchise and deliver a more brutal experience than the last few installment in the series.

The game will be called Mortal Kombat, featuring no subtitle, and will be launching at some point during 2011 for the Xbox 360 from Microsoft and the PlayStation 3 from Sony. Development is handled by the newly unveiled NetherRealm Studios, which is apparently the same core team that handled the Mortal Kombat franchise at the now defunct Midway.

The main creative mind behind the fresh Mortal Kombat title will be Ed Boon, who is saying he envisions it as “a response to what players have been demanding: mature presentation, reinvented 2D fighting mechanic and the best, most gruesome fatalities ever!” This comes as a lot of fans disliked Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe exactly because the use of comic book characters led to a toning down of the level of violence in the experience.

Martin Tremblay, who is the president of Warner Bros., stated, “We are bringing the Mortal Kombat franchise back to gamers with the talented NetherRealm Studios team creating the game fans long to play. Re-establishing the brand with Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, Mortal Kombat innovates on past games while staying true to the brand’s legendary characters and fighting style.”

This comes just as fans of the Mortal Kombat universe were impressed by a new trailer that popped up on YouTube, set to be a pitch for a new movie in the series, which aims to bring a more urban and gritty feel to the old story of the ultimate fighting tournament. At the moment, the title to beat in the fighting game genre is Capcom's Super Street Fighter IV.
