Video game publisher Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and developer NetherRealm Studios have announced that they are developing a version of their fighting game Mortal Kombat which is set to be launched during the spring of the year on the new PlayStation Vita handheld from Sony.

The two companies are promising that they will deliver a number of new gameplay features that are exclusive to the new gaming handheld and all new content.

The developer has not said exactly which characters will be included in the PlayStation Vita version of Mortal Kombat, although a number of hints can be seen in the attacked packshot, which is not final.

It seems that the core of the Mortal Kombat Vita experience is based on the 2011 reboot of the series, so players can expect to see ultraviolence, fatalities and the new X-ray moves.

Ed Boon, who is now the creative director working at NetherRealm Studios and the man behind much of the success of the franchise, has stated when the announcement was made that, “The NetherRealm team is committed to making sure that we follow up the success of 2011’s Mortal Kombat with an equally compelling experience on the PlayStation Vita.”

He added, “The original game content and new features we developed for the PlayStation Vita will provide gamers with the best fighting game experience available on the new mobile platform.”

The rebooted Mortal Kombat that was released in 2011 has managed to become the highest selling fighting game of the year, moving more than 3 million copies to players and has received a number of awards.

The series had been in decline before NetherRealm Studios started working with Warner Bros. but the franchise now seems to be healthy and will allow mobile gamers to once again crush their friends and enemies using well known characters and, maybe, some new faces.
