Sales for makeup products are soaring as a new beauty trend emerges: the vampire look

Until just months ago, having a healthy, glowing tan (whether natural or fake it did not matter, although many opted for the latter on health considerations) was the thing to do in terms of keeping up with beauty / makeup trends. Now, after the second film in the “Twilight” franchise has arrived, the hottest look one can strive to achieve is pale and goth-like, resembling a vampire, Marie Claire writes.

This may sound somewhat ridiculous – and certainly no woman over a certain age would ever even consider doing – but figures released by some of the biggest retailers of cosmetic products already indicate that women’s preferences in terms of makeup have changed. Strong, vivid colors are no longer desired, and have been replaced by those that would best hint at how the popular vampires and other similarly attractive undead creatures look.

In this sense, it’s no wonder then that sales for pale foundation have gone through the roof in the UK at least, as Marie Claire informs. “The latest Twilight-inspired beauty trend to hit critical mass is for pale-skinned beauties only (but plenty are working out how to fake it). The orange glow of self-tan has been slowly fading since spring last year as more of us want a natural look, but the new Twilight phenomenon has firmly cemented pale skin as a beauty must-do.” the women’s magazine says.

Generally speaking, the pale skin is just the starting point for the vampire look. Aside from doing their best to keep out of the sun (as it is at this time of the year), women also choose smoky-eye makeup and blood-red lips – all matched with hair dyes in black colors and, of course, the ability to refrain from smiling. All jokes aside, it would seem that the vampire look, as inspired by the second “Twilight” film, is here to stay, with many saying it will probably reach its peak this spring.

“Sales of pale foundations have shot through the roof since the release of this year’s hottest film, ‘Twilight: New Moon.’ Cosmetic companies have seen a 200 per cent rise in customers snapping up pale foundation powders and liquids, which coincides with the ‘Twilight: New Moon’ film. According to online beauty shop FeelUnique, its best-selling product is now a fine, pale pink illuminating powder by Bare Escentuals called Mineral Veil. Meanwhile sales of L’Oreal’s True Match powder in Rose Ivory have also risen by 133 per cent.” Marie Claire also reports.
