Meizu has recently been in the spotlight after an image of its upcoming MX4 phone that apparently runs Ubuntu Touch leaked online in all its splendor.

But this week the Meizu name returns in a fresh tidbit. According to an interview conducted by Chinese portal ZOL that talked to the company’s VP, Li Nan, the company is gearing up to roll out a new “quality smartphone” for young people (as seen at MTKSJ).

The big launch is expected to happen sometime today, so keep checking back with us for more information about the upcoming handset.

Lan didn’t go into specifics about the upcoming handset, but it’s highly likely that this new smartphone for teens is in fact the low-cost Meizu K52, which popped up in the lofty database of GFX Bench not so long ago.

If we’re to believe the listing, the smartphone will bring a bunch of pretty decent specs to the table and will be marketed for a super affordable price tag.

Possible specs of the new Meizu phone

According to the database, the smartphone will boast a 4.6-inch display with 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution and will draw power from a 64-bit octa-core CPU or more precisely a MediaTek MT6752 chipset clocked at 1.7GHz with LTE.

The handset will take advantage of 2GB of RAM and 12GB of internal storage and will probably run Meizu’s own Flyme OS 4.1 which is based on Android 4.4.4 KitKat.

Hopefully, an update to Android 5.0 Lollipop will be issued at some point in the future. Anyway, customers will be able to get ahold of this device if they are willing to take out approximately $160 / €130 out of their pocket.

Meizu is currently seeing huge demand for its smartphone products. For example, the MX4 Pro (a high class model) scored 7 million pre-orders.

The smartphone accommodates a 5.5-inch NEGA LCD display that supports HD resolution, 546 ppi and 450 nits.

The Chinese company decided to opt for a Samsung Exynos 5430 octa-core chip set which is made up of a quad-core 2GHz Cortex-A15 processor plus a 1.5GHz quad-core Cortex-A7 CPU and Mali-T628 MP6 graphics processing unit.

In addition to offering some sketchy information about their upcoming teen-friendly budget phone, Meizu’s CEO also dismissed talk of possible MX Mini models.

It’s the company’s view that the current MX4 and MX4 Pro which take advantage of 5.36-inch and 5.5-inch displays respectively are enough to suit everybody’s needs, so there’s no need to shrink things down.

However, with the teen-specific smartphone, Meizu has agreed to cut on screen size a little bit, probably in order to make it cuter and more pocketable.
