BioWare could release spinoffs based on fan favorite characters

BioWare has talked about the idea of releasing spinoff Mass Effect games that could focus on secondary characters like Garrus or Javik, instead of Commander Shepard, but nothing is certain as of yet.

The main Mass Effect franchise ended with Mass Effect 3 last year and BioWare has since confirmed that it's working on a new installment that stars a different character than Commander Shepard.

While talking with OXM UK, several BioWare staffers speculated on whether or not the series can support spinoff experiences that focus on some of Shepard's squad mates, like Garrus.

"There's so much that could be told in the Mass Effect universe," franchise Producer Casey Hudson said. "It'd be cool to do something completely unrelated to the larger storyline, like a story about a private investigator on the Citadel. Or maybe something detailing Garrus' time in C-Sec."

A Garrus spinoff could work, as BioWare's Dusty Everman also mentioned that the character's story has a lot of potential for a video game, given its action-filled events.

"While being one of Shepard's most loyal friends, Garrus has also had some of the most driven personal goals. He's a hero in his own right, as Archangel and beyond. Who wouldn't want to see the further adventures of the bold, charming Garrus Vakarian (there's a lot of guns out there to calibrate)."

Other Mass Effect spinoff stories could also be told about characters like Aria, The Illusive Man, Kai Leng, or about the Krogan race in the form of a melee-focused experience.

Javik, the Prothean discovered by Shepard in the From Ashes DLC for Mass Effect 3 could also work, according to the studio's Mike Gamble.

"Following the story of Javik a little bit more would be pretty cool. As the last remaining member of a lost race, I think that we could tell a lot of stories about his adventures in the Milky Way, and coming to terms with his place in the new Galaxy."

As of yet, however, BioWare hasn't detailed its next Mass Effect game.
