Video game developer and publisher Nintendo says that it will launch a new Mario Party video game during the winter of this year, exclusively on the Nintendo 3DS handheld that the company also produces.

The traditional formula of the series will be maintained, with players able to engage in many competitive multiplayer mini-games with friends via various connectivity options.

Nintendo plans to introduce a number of Alternate Reality experiences to Mario Party, with 7 different boards to play on, each of them with a unique set of rules, according to Joystiq.

Presumably more information about all the mini-games will be offered as the year progresses.

The Nintendo 3DS initially failed to impress in terms of sales after it was launched, but a price cut and improving catalog of games have since made the hardware a success.
