Developed by the people at uncomplex gmbh, Mailplane is now available for download in its latest beta form – version 2.1b (1229). The application brings Gmail to Mac users' desktops, and is touted as the perfect tool for those using both the Mac, as well as Google's mail client.

“This Beta (cutting edge) version adds support for ‘Offline Gmail,’” uncomplex gmbh says. “If you like, try and test it, you are welcome to do so. Keep in mind that this beta software may still have bugs and is less stable than the released version. Use at your own risk,” the developer warns. As for Snow Leopard users, those who wish to download and install Google Gears are encouraged to visit this page.

Mailplane allows users to attach files, send optimized photos, instantly send screenshots and pictures from iPhoto, store passwords in keychain, perform downloads, and more, all backed by the built-in, sound-notification system, or Growl. Besides these features, the app brings Google Mail's SPAM protection, endless storage and global access, and the UI friendliness of one's Mac. An iPhoto plugin allows users to send pictures from iPhoto by selecting their images and pressing the email button. Just like any mail app, Mailplane can be set to play a sound when new items arrive, and to show the number of unread messages in the application icon.

Requiring a Macintosh computer running Mac OS X 10.4.11 or later and Safari 3.2.x or Safari 4 beta, Mailplane is a Universal Binary (compatible with both PowerPC and Intel architectures) and costs 24.95 dollars to buy. A trial version of the software is available using the download link below. Existing owners can visit the same page to update to the latest version of Mailplane.

The latest stable version of Mailplane (2.0.15) fixes issues caused by some recent Gmail changes (Send, Discard, and Save Now toolbar buttons and menu items stopped working), a fix for attachment handling like drag and drop and a fix for Command-L (Apply/Remove Label) showing an empty list.
