Still under debate whether or not we're looking at impeccable Photoshop work

Pictures of a so-called MacBook mini surfaced yesterday courtesy of an anonymous tipster who claimed to have spotted the new device in a Russian magazine. While almost certainly fake, the renderings are very impressive, as well as realistic. More images have been leaked today, one of which compares the alleged new notebook with Apple's currently selling 13-inch MacBook and the MacBook Air.

Not much has changed since yesterday's report, except for the newly arrived pictures that show a striking resemblance between the (probably fake) MacBook mini and the world's thinnest laptop, the MacBook Air.

A comparison shot between the latter, the 13-inch unibody MacBook and the rumored device is now available, courtesy of 9to5Mac, which received more pictures of the alleged MacBook mini shown on the pages of an unnamed Russian mag. The mini laptop fits the unibody family perfectly and should make a suitable candidate for an Apple netbook, thus putting dozens of rumors to rest.

9to5Mac points out to April fools’ day as a good indication that readers should not get too excited, even though the MacBook mini design and shots are stunningly realistic. The specs accompanying the imagery also seem highly possible.

• 10.4" WXGA display. • 1280 x 768 pixel with LED backlighting. • NVIDIA MCP79 • Intel Atom Z740 1.83GHz with 1MB L2 cache. • 2GB DDR3-800. • NVIDIA GeForce 9400M • 64GB Solid State Drive. • Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR, Wi-Fi 802.11a/b/g/n • 1 x USB 2.0 • 1 x Mini Display Port • Battery Li-Ion 5100mA.

While Apple has denied not once, but several times that it was building a netbook, the Mac maker is widely believed to want to tap into this market. With the technology at hand, as well as the high demand for an Apple-branded web-surfing laptop, the company has the reasons to act accordingly, even though it prefers to play by its own rules.
