Apple has finally addressed issues surrounding the glass trackpad on its new, unibody MacBook and MacBook pro models, by releasing MacBook, MacBook Pro Trackpad Firmware Update 1.0. The update is free for all users of Late 2008, and is aimed at notebooks that have experienced issues with trackpad clicks.

Not long after Apple released its new aluminum notebooks, users started complaining about the laptops' inability to register clicks at times. The issue proved to be widespread, with one user actually e-mailing Apple's CEO on the problem. Steve Jobs had seemingly called up on the support staff, and had them get in touch with the user by phone. According to the user, Apple's employee said the company would be "researching the clicking issue," but that "they have no resolution of it."

Allegedly, the representative also took a cautious stand, telling the user "there’s not really an official acknowledgment of it," therefore they couldn’t help him for the time being. Nevertheless, "they are checking into it because they’ve heard the complaint frequently," the same user reported. On very short notice, however, Apple seemed to have acknowledged the issues as widespread, with World of Apple reporting that the situation had been “fortified further as an email coming from Steve Jobs’ email account reveals that a 'software fix is coming soon'."

The rumors have been confirmed, as Apple has released what it calls a “MacBook, MacBook Pro Trackpad Firmware Update 1.0.” Full details on the update, as provided on Apple's Support section, are available below.

About MacBook, MacBook Pro Trackpad Firmware Update 1.0

This firmware update addresses an issue where trackpad clicks may not be recognized on MacBook (Late 2008) and MacBook Pro (Late 2008) systems.

The update package will install an updater application into the Applications/Utilities folder, and will launch it automatically.

Follow the instructions in the updater application to complete the update process.

During the installation process, a warning will appear on the screen of your MacBook, saying that the trackpad will not respond during the update. Additionally, users are advised not to interrupt the update, or shut off the power on the Mac while the update is in progress, and that they should make sure the notebook is connected to a power source.

There are two ways in which you can download and install the update. One requires you to hit the Apple button in the menubar of your MacBook, select Software Update, and choose MacBook Pro Trackpad Firmware Update 1.0. The alternative is to download the installer package yourself, double click it, and follow the same instructions during installation. For the second method, we have provided a download link below. Be sure to let us know if the update does its job.

Ryan: don't hold your expectations too high... i'm finding after the firmware update that the trackpad is still responding poorly compared to on many other trackpads i've used... the sensitivity is unpredictable, sometimes a light touch means a click, other times it doesn't. it is very frustrating and i hope that future firmware upgrades can address this, although i'm a bit scared that this is due to new hardware teething problems...

I have a 2.53 macbook pro, definitely still have repsonse issues (noticeably slower than clicking) even after the auto firmware update)

The new "all-in-one" trackpad is disastrous. i think Apple took the iPhone glass touch idea and rammed it in these laptops without proper testing.
The worst is that many clicks seem to jump down and select whatever was just below where you positioned the cursor.
God knows how they'll fix it. Maybe they won't bother. It's a pain in what is otherwise a great laptop.
