New details about the recently announced Tomb Raider reboot have appeared, right out of the special Game Informer magazine issue that is currently hitting news stands in the USA.

As you know from yesterday's announcement, the new Tomb Raider reboot will feature a younger version of Lara Croft, and take on a more hardcore route, as she needs to survive on a mysterious island filled with dangers.

New details have just appeared, concerning Lara, the island and the characters that inhabit it.

According to them, the new Tomb Raider game will be a reboot of the entire brand, so we won't see any models hired to act as Lara at launch events.

The heroine is 21 years old in this game, and will be faced with extreme dangers, ranging from environmental ones, like boulders falling on her or platforms crumbling, to human enemies who can kill her in gruesome ways if she isn't careful.

Her weapons arsenal will be less bulky, and, according to the concept art, will include things like a bow, shotgun or a pistol.

The island on which Lara is trapped is a completely open world, meaning players will be able to explore every nook and cranny right off the bat, and a new free aim system will be added instead of the old auto targeting one.

"I think that the major difference between this game and the old is the concept of smoke and mirrors," begins Darrell Gallagher, the studio head at Crystal Dynamics. "There was an illusion of freedom because of streaming and loading that would pop you out in a different location, but this is absolutely real. You can literally go any direction that you see and carve your own way to the finish line instead of being guided."

"It was important in the game to not only deliver the character arc of Lara Croft emotionally, but to deliver it in gameplay as well so the player gets to grow into a hardened survivor," says experienced director Noah Hughes.

Lara won't be able to explore every area though, as her tomb raiding abilities depend on her tools, gear and move set, meaning she must collect and learn them in order to access new areas.

There are several base camps around the island, set up by survivors of the same ship wreck as Lara, and she must gather food and water in order to survive.
