While laptop and notebook computer systems were first designed to be portable devices and their entire internal and external architectures were aimed toward that end, nowadays a new breed of mobile computer systems are hitting the market and making pretty big waves too, the desktop replacement
systems, that are sporting big screens and pretty bulky cases.

This does not mean that the days of the portable computer systems are over, as most users find the notebooks and laptops equipped with 17 inch widescreens or larger, too cumbersome to carry around. On the other hand the constant technological advance in the display manufacturing industry now allows computer users to access bigger native resolutions even on smaller displays.

Overall, it seems that notebook displays are getting bigger but without reaching the 17 inch mark in most cases and a number of display manufacturing companies are now working on a new standard that would bring slightly larger screens for mobile computers. The new standard proposes two new screen sizes of 15.6 and 16 inches and while according to the news site fudzilla, there is no word yet about the native resolutions supported by the new displays. Considering the very wide range of resolutions available now on the market for mobile computer systems that are using the 154 and 17 inch displays, it is very likely that the new screens will support an equally wide range of native resolutions, depending mostly on the manufacturing companies.

Among the companies that already started shipping the new displays there are big names like Samsung, AU Optronics and Chi Mei Optoelectronic. While the difference between the new 15.6 and the already in use 15.4 inch is very small and it may not bring any noticeable advantage, the word out is that the two displays will be priced at the same level.

One of the first companies to equip notebooks and laptops with the new 16 inch widescreen displays will be HP and Acer is likely to soon follow and the Asian company is also looking toward 15.6 inch screens, just like Asus. In order to maintain the new display sizes reasonable slim and lightweight, most manufacturing companies will likely go for the LED backlight illumination approach that would lead over the next few years to even bigger screen sizes for the mobile computer systems.
