14 DAY TRIAL // The LCD versus CRT debate is far from over; lately the arguments of those supporting CRT are getting fewer. The things are getting worse, since Viewsonic launched the firs LCD-s with a response time below 5 milliseconds, beating the Benq 8 millisecond record.
There are two LCD parameters quantifying the response time: the gray-to-gray and the black-to-white response times.
The gray-to-gray response time measures how fast one pixel turns from one color shade to another shade of the same color. This response time is below 4 ms for ViewSonic displays, which is especially important for video applications, where pixels change shades more frequent than they change colors.
The black-to-white response time is met in all LCD specs, and measures how fast one pixel can turn to another color. For the VX series, the response time is 5 milliseconds.
On a LCD market when the average response time is still around 30 - 35 milliseconds, the two models announced by Viewsonic, VX924 and VX724 are designed especially for gamers and those willing to play their DVD-s on the computer.
According to their code names, the two models feature 19 and 17 inch displays and are the first ViewSonic LCD-s combining Dynamic Structure and Amplified Impulse proprietary technologies, enabling a 250 State Ownership Fund refresh rate for the whole color scale.
The top model, VX924 has a maximal resolution of 1280x1024 for a 80 Hz refresh rate and a 160 degree visibility angle. The contrast is 500:1 while the brightness is 270 cd/m2.
With a 431x370x66 mm size and a 8.5 kg weight (support included), VX924 is ideal for the office environment as well.
This LCD innovative technology might definitely shift the balance towards such displays, especially since manufacturers will follow the ViewSonic example, doubling the manufacturing capacity as a follow-up of dealer requests.
ViewSonic otherwise announced the intent to make other 17 and 19 inch models comply with these response times. The 19 inch version is to become available in March for $505, while the 17 inch is expected in June ($359).
