Canonical has announced on October 21, 2013, that a new kernel update is available for its Ubuntu 12.10 (Quantal Quetzal) Linux operating system, fixing one vulnerability found in the Linux kernel packages.

Dan Carpenter discovered an information leak in the Compaq SMART2 disk-array driver and HP Smart Aray in the Linux kernel, which could allow a local user to gather sensitive information from kernel memory.

To learn more about this new kernel vulnerability, please read the CVE-2013-2147 reference, because it affects other Linux operating systems as well.

The security flaw can be fixed if you upgrade your Ubuntu 12.10 system(s) to the linux-image-3.5.0-42 (3.5.0-42.65) package(s). For that, you can use the included Update Manager tool, or visit the following link for detailed instructions: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Security/Upgrades.

Don't forget to reboot your computer after the upgrade! We remind everyone that Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (Precise Pangolin) has also received a kernel update this week.
