Canonical announced on March 6th, in two different security notices, that new vulnerabilities were found in the Linux kernel packages, this time affecting its LTS distributions: Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (Lucid Lynx) and Ubuntu 8.04 LTS (Hardy Heron) operating systems.

The following three Linux kernel vulnerabilities affect the Ubuntu Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (Lucid Lynx) operating system: CVE-2011-4127, CVE-2011-4347, CVE-2011-4622, CVE-2012-0038, and CVE-2012-0879.

The following five Linux kernel vulnerabilities affect the Ubuntu 8.04 LTS (Hardy Heron) operating system: CVE-2011-1476, CVE-2011-1477, CVE-2011-2182, CVE-2011-4324, and CVE-2012-0028.

As usual, you can click on each one to see how it affects your system, or go here and here for in-depth descriptions.

The security flaws can be fixed if you upgrade your system(s) to the linux-image-2.6.32-39 (2.6.32-39.86) package(s) for Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and the linux-image-2.6.24-31 (2.6.24-31.99) package(s) for Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (Lucid Lynx).

Don't forget to reboot your computer after the upgrade!

ATTENTION: Due to an unavoidable ABI change, the kernel packages have a new version number, which will force you to reinstall and recompile all third-party kernel modules you might have installed. Moreover, if you use the linux-restricted-modules package, you have to update it as well to get modules which work with the new Linux kernel version.
