New Iomega Portable HDD

- 200GB and 250GB storage capacities

By: Alexandru Pancescu, Hardware Editor

Portable hard disk drives, HDDs for short, are having a field day as the cost per gigabyte decreased a lot and the need to carry larger and larger amounts of data around are just getting higher. Very useful for notebook or laptop owners that are having trouble keeping all the data on the traditionally smaller hard disk drives of their portable computing platforms, the new Iomega Portable Hard Drives are coming in two standard sizes, 200 and 250GB and are packed in a small form factor, about the size of a modern day PDA
system.

Both of the Iomega portable hard disk drives are quite light and they do not need an external power supply, being powered by the same USB port that is used for data transfers. As the drive at its thickest point has only 12.7mm it can be easily fitted in just any pocket or laptop bag. Like most other portable data transporting solutions, the Iomega portable hard disk drive family is implementing a protective technology, called the Iomega Drop Shock, that helps keep the drive safe against mechanical shocks and vibrations. The metallic external casing is silver colored and attractive and as an additional good point it is fully rugged in order to "protect data from the inevitable bumps and dings of portable use."

The portable hard disk drives are using the 5400rom standard as well as 8MB of cache memory for faster data transfer speeds. "Iomega’s newest portable hard drives are excellent choices for anyone who needs portable storage, and the 250GB Iomega Portable Hard Drive sets a new benchmark for portable hard drive storage capacity," said Ashley Ettwein, hard disk drive product manager, Iomega Corporationm in a press release concerning the launch of the new portable storage line of products. "Not only do these two new portable hard drives provide more raw storage capacity than many people have in their desktop PCs, they also use the latest technology to help ensure that the data on the drives stay safe."

As the back up of important data on portable storage devices is a popular way of securing information, the Iomega Portable Hard Drive line of products comes with specialized bundled software suites that make backing up and restoring systems easy. The application EMC Retrospect Express that is bundled, comes with integrated support for both Windows and Mac users. The Iomega hard disk drives are compatible with all major operating systems on the market today thanks to its plug and play design and USB version 2.0 compliance, while supporting backwards compatibility with the older USB 1.0 and 1.1 standards too.
