Large-scale companies usually have divisions for every one of their business outlets, but Intel decided to go one step further and create a whole company dedicated to just the supercomputing segment.
Intel is a company with many aims and considerable resources, even though it mainly has a stake in the processor market.
Then again,
x86 chips are used in almost every sort of machine out there, except mobile devices that like ARM chips more.
With this in mind, there is no real strangeness associated with Intel being a top-grade player in the IT field.
On that note, hardly any time passes without Intel announcing some new product or development.
What the company did most recently was set the foundation for a completely new owned subsidiary, one that will focus on the supercomputing front.
Bearing the name of Intel Federal LLC, it will primarily work with the US Government for making exascale computing solutions for the U.S. department of energy and other agencies.
“The creation of Intel Federal demonstrates the strategic importance of these programs and will give us the ability to establish and maintain the unique processes, procedures and controls needed to develop and manage programs with the government,” said Kirk Skaugen vice president and general manager of Intel’s datacenter and connected systems group.
“Reaching supercomputer performance levels of a hundred times more powerful than today by 2018 will require the combined efforts of both industry and government. An ExaFlop supercomputer’s performance is the equivalent of every person on Earth making about 150 million calculations per second. We look forward to collaborating more closely with the U.S. government on future supercomputing challenges.”
Dave Peterson has been made president of the new company. Moving forward, Intel federal LLC will strive to meet the level of secrecy/confidentiality that the government requires.
