The Intel Xeon E7 family of central processing units is currently in its second generation, and has the high-end computing markets well in hand. But Intel is already working on the next generation.

Said generation will be called Xeon E7 v3 and will replace the current Haswell EX generation of high-end, extreme edition CPUs in 2015.

More precisely, they will be launched near the middle of next year, according to CPU World.

There will be Xeon E7 48xx v3 CPUs and Xeon E7 88xx v3 series chips. The former collection is composed of Xeon E7-4809 v3, E7-4820 v3, E7-4830 v3 and E7-4850 v3 units, while the latter contains Xeon E7-8860 v3, E7-8867 v3, E7-8870 v3, E7-8880 v3, E7-8880L v3, E7-8890 v3, E7-8891 v3 and E7-8893 v3 SKUs.

The chips ending with a zero will be the “normal” ones, while those ending in any other numbers are made for specific markets. The ones with an L suffix are low-power models for smaller, compact servers that still need an edge in performance.

The Haswell EX CPUs will be paired with the C602J chipset and will possess scalable C112/C114 memory buffers.

Curiously enough, the total of 12 SKUs means that there will be 7 fewer chips in total, compared to the current collection.
