Apparently eager to expand its external storage line with some new mobile models, Hitachi Global Storage Technologies has prepared a pair of new TravelStar HDDs, both available in multiple capacities and featuring Advanced Format.

Deciding to set aside the SuprSpeed USB 3.0 standard, for now at least, Hitachi created the TravelStar 5K750 and 7K750 mobile external hard disk drives for laptops.

As their status implies, they utilize the 2.5-inch compact form factor, their thickness being of 9.5 mm.

In terms of hardware, the 5K750 and 7K750 have platter rotary speeds of 5,400 and 7,200 RPM, while their SATA 3.0 Gbps interface makes them compatible with a variety of PCs.

The Advanced Format technology basically implies that the sector size is of 4,096 bytes, while the 8 MB (5K750) or 16 MB (7K750) of buffer memory ensure a good performance.

Hitachi also implemented Thermal Fly-Height Control (TFC), which improves reliability and soft error rate, while the TrueTrack Technology deals with accuracy tracking in vibration or high stock environments.

Hitachi prepared 500 GB, 640 GB and 750 GB models of both new mobile hard drives, all with two platters.

"Our new Travelstar 5K750 and 7K750 offerings address the growing demand for high-capacity and low-power hard drives, which are at the heart of today's notebooks, external storage devices, gaming consoles and other mobile computing applications," said Brendan Collins, vice president of Product Marketing at Hitachi GST.

"Couple this with our proven design platforms and broad 2.5-inch portfolio, and Hitachi GST continues to demonstrate its leadership in the 2.5-inch mobile hard drive market," Collins added.

The Travelstar 5K750 is already shipping in volume and retail hard drive kits will be available in November, for $129.99. The 7,200 RPM Travelstar 7K750 family will show up during the first quarter of 2011.

"From their recently announced slim, 7mm 2.5-inch drives to their broad new family of standard 9.5mm 2.5-inch hard drives, Hitachi offers a wide variety of capacities, speeds and form factors that support virtually all of our notebook computing needs," said Wentao Yang, vice president, Global Procurement of Lenovo.
