It is not the Google Phone, it seems

The HTC Nexus One is the latest hot mobile phone from the Taiwanese handset vendor HTC Corporation that made it into the headlines for the past few days. The handset, which seems to be the one and only HTC Passion / Bravo, is said to be the long rumored Google Phone that many enthusiasts are certainly waiting for, and has just surfaced in a new series of photos, while also passing through FCC's courtyard.

First off, on that FCC approval, we should mention that the handset has received it with HSPA 900 / 1700 / 2100 MHz and quad band EDGE connectivity options on board, something that might reinforce rumors on it coming straight towards T-Mobile's airwaves. At the same time, the FCC filing also unveiled the fact that it would sport Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR and 802.11b/g WiFi capabilities, as well as a microSD memory card slot for additional storage space. Take a look at the first photo below to learn more.

At a certain point, the phone has been said to be on its way towards AT&T too, yet Engadget points out that the new details suggest that the carrier won't taste the Nexus One after all. This also means that T-Mobile's subscribers can already start partying, because a very nice Android-based handset is on its way to them. Whether with Android 2.1 or with another version of the operating system, the Passion / Nexus One should arrive in the not too far future it seems, even if it won't prove to be the Google Phone in the end.

Enthusiasts might not take this lightly, yet it still needs to be said. Google itself said that the handset handed over to its employees came from a partner and that it was meant to test some new technologies, confirming the existence of the device, but not suggesting that this is the Google phone expected by us all. However, intomobile quotes Eldar Murtazin, editor in chief of Mobile-Review, saying that Nexus One is a Google Phone only in name: Google Phone =Android phone, and that it is the HTC Passion with Android 2.1 on board. For what it's worth, this is more in line with what Google themselves said: only software licensing. Until all these clear up, you might want to check the new images with the Nexus One, available courtesy of Engadget (the entire gallery here).
