NeuroSky intends to build new headsets for Nintendo Wii, Sony Playstation 3 and Microsoft Xbox 360

Virtual reality glasses may not be the answer to future gaming. Here's what may fit a future gamer's forehead: a biofeedback headset that reads brain waves, retina and forehead muscles in order to affect game play.

Silicon Valley-based Neurosky has already developed a headset based on a Star Wars game (a Darth Vader game targeted at young lads). Here's how this works. A sensor built-in the helmet touches your forehead and reads your brain's signals and then sends them to a wireless receiver inside the saber. NeuroSky's device measures your baseline brain wave activity, including signals that relate to concentration, relaxation and anxiety. The technology ranks performance in each category on a scale of 1 to 100, and the numbers change as the person thinks about relaxing images, focuses or gets interrupted (by a curious parent).

The real news is that companies like NeuroSky and Emotiv Systems intend to take the childish technology used in the Darth Vader game to its puberty level. Besides the EEG (electroencephalogram) technology, the companies plan to add electromyography (EMG) and electrooculography (EOG) technology to the gel- free caps. The EMG will record movements of the muscles on your forehead and the EOG will scan your retina for changes that might appear during the game. All the collected data will then be sent to, let's say, the Wii central unit.

There are a few problems though. If you don't lock your doors to stop humans from visiting your room, there's no way you can concentrate in order to keep the force with you. Secondly, you can't properly use headphones if you stick this kind of devices to your forehead.

We are just a few, but there are many of you, Softpedia users, out there.
