The official release should be just around the corner

HTC ThunderBolt, the first Android-based mobile phone that arrived on shelves at Verizon Wireless with support for the carrier's 4G LTE network, is still stuck on the Android 2.2 Froyo OS, which might not be able to put to good use all of the capabilities the handset was packed with from the beginning.

However, an Android 2.3 Gingerbread OS upgrade is headed for the mobile phone, although no specific info on when it might arrive has emerged until now.

HTC themselves confirmed at the beginning of this month that the software update would be pushed to HTC ThunderBolt soon, but was mum on the actual release date for the new OS.

Even so, progress is being made towards the final release of this software update, and the fact that a new Gingerbread ROM for the device has just emerged into the wild is proof of that.

Make no mistake, this is not the official update that you might be looking for, but merely a leaked ROM, one that will require the tweaking of your ThunderBolt for installation.

Undoubtedly, there are users who would go the hard way to try a new piece of software on their devices, and they will certainly download and try out the new leak.

However, before proceeding, they should know that they will be the only ones held responsible for any damage that this update might cause in case things do not go as planned during the installation process.

Moreover, they should also back up all data on their handsets before kicking of the update, because the phone will be wiped clean.

According to the guys over at Android Police, to update the ThunderBolt to the leaked ROM, users should do the following: - Rename the file to 'PG05IMG.zip' (without quotes) - Drop it on the root of the SD Card - Turn off the device - Hold Volume Down + Power to reboot into the bootloader -- the file should automatically be detected and the flashing process will begin. - Wait for the device to complete the process and reboot.

As stated above, this is merely a leaked Gingerbread ROM for the ThunderBolt, and users are advised to wait for the official release to upgrade their devices. However, those who would rather have a taste of Gingerbread sooner will be able to find the leaked ROM over the Internet.
