One designer aims to take the smartwatch back to its origins

So far 2014 seems to be the year of the wearables and more and more companies appear to be interested in taking up this form factor. In recent weeks, Samsung has been making waves with its new Gear 2, Gear 2 Neo smartwatches and Gear Fit heath band. But a new recently surfaced online smartwatch concept, could really put Samsung to shame.

Samsung launched the Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo as successors of the original Galaxy Gear smartwatch at MWC in Barcelona. Even though the new models are sleeker and better looking than the predecessor, we can’t help but noting they are still quite bulky when mounted around the wrist.

On the other hand, the Gear Fit looks more practical and more discreet, but it lacks a lot of the features the other two products bring to the table.

Well, Gábor Balogh’s new smartwatch concept blends in the best of both worlds, tastefully mixing functionality with style, just as we hoped Samsung might do.

The new design doesn’t compromise in terms of looks, so those of you mulling over smartwatching retaining the round traditional design will be pleasantly surprised. The smartwatch’s description on Behance says it all.

“The look and feel it is like wearing a traditional watch but the conventional parts get smart functions.”

The “smart” features are present but subtly embedded in different parts of the device, including a pushable bezel.

A special application bar will pop up on the watch’s screen only when the gear is synced to a smartphone or tablet.

The watch features a spacious display that leaves enough room for notifications, health apps, music playback and more. Like most wearables today, the round smartwatch is capable of handling incoming calls and messages.

Applications can be launched by virtue of the above-mentioned bezel, while the built-in functions are reachable by virtue of crown and pusher.

On top of that, the watch is capable of displaying the next upcoming event from your schedule, to provide basic navigation cues (when paired with smartphones) and has a built-in stopwatch with extended features.

Going back to Samsung, earlier this week alleged pricing specifications for the Gear 2, Gear 2 Neo and Gear Fit have been leaked into the wild, showing us the devices won’t come cheap at all.

Apparently, customers willing to jump on board with Sammy, when wearables are concerned will have to pay £299 / $498 / €363 for the Gear 2 and £199 / $331 / €242 for the Gear 2 Neo and Gear Fit.

So while we’re waiting for something like Balogh’s concept to become a reality, would you pay for any of Sammy’s wearables?
