Two of the most prominent iOS apps get iPhone 6 support

Google and Facebook have simultaneously released updates to their popular iOS client applications, adding native-screen support for the latest Apple devices, as well as bug fixes.

Most of the apps on the iOS App Store are still not supported on the new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, so don’t be surprised if your favorite developer hasn’t yet updated its apps for the new resolutions. No one knew (for sure) what the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus looked like before Apple unveiled them on September 9.

Facebook 16.0 now available

Facebook doesn’t say in the changelog what the 16.0 update is all about. The release notes only state, “Thanks for using Facebook! To make our app better for you, we bring updates to the App Store every 4 weeks. If you have iOS7 or up, you can update the app automatically (without checking back here) by going to Settings > iTunes & App Store > Automatic Downloads and turning on Updates.”

“Every update of our Facebook app includes improvements for speed and reliability. As other new features become available, we’ll highlight those for you in the app,” the social network adds.

However, tests carried out with the official Facebook 16.0 app on iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus show that the app is now fully supported on the new screen resolutions. You can now get more content than ever on a single page on the iPhone 6 Plus. Facebook has yet to update the screenshots on the App Store to reflect these changes.

YouTube gets bug fixes too

In addition to getting support for the new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, YouTube 2.13 also includes bug fixes to prevent the status bar from overlapping the UI, address keyboard orientation issues, make scrubbing more responsive, and show all playlists when adding videos to the queue.

Facebook is fully supported by iOS 8 but still only requires iOS 7, meaning you can use it on anything from iPhone 4 to the latest iPhones and iPads. Google is even more generous. Its YouTube app only requires iOS 6 (at least according to the App Store listing), which means that it still supports even iPhone 3GS devices.

Use the supplied links to grab the two apps, or visit the iTunes App Store on your iDevice to search for and wirelessly download the two pieces of software on the spot.
