While performing in the U.K in 2003 the Dixie Chicks caused an outcry as Natalie Maine commented on the Administration's politics and stated "Just so you know, we're ashamed the president of the United States is from Texas."
The comment came in a very bad moment, as the coalition was just about to send the troops to Iraq. The band's albums and CDs were burned and the group members received death threats.
Born and raised in the same home state of Texas as president Bush the three group members ( Maines, Robison and Martie Maguire) were shocked by the fanaticism of the backlash but still don't agree with what the Texan Bush is doing (to the world and to America).
Their brand new album, Taking the Long Way, soon to be released (May) has one song that shows how the girls dealt with the controversy and threats and how they feel about those who were responsible.
Not Ready to Make Nice is a song about the actual thing that happened in 2003:
"And how in the world can the words that I said
Send somebody so over the edge
That they'd write me a letter
Sayin' that I better shut up and sing
Or my life will be over "
The band has lost some fans over their political opinions but is still to disagree with the war in Iraq. They said that once Not Ready to Make Nice was finished recording they felt that a bad moment of their career was finally over and found enough positive energy to focus on the rest of the recordings.
