Windows 8’s sales performance might be well below expectations, but statistics revealed by market researcher Net Applications a few days ago indicate that it has already become the third most popular OS in the world, after Windows 7 and XP, with a share of 5.4 percent.

Figures provided by StatCounter, however, claim that Windows 8 is actually powering many more computers worldwide, as it currently holds a market share of 6.61 percent.

Still, Windows 8 is only the fourth top platform in the world this time, after Windows 7, XP, and Mac OS X. Apple’s very own OS is still powering 7.35 percent of the machines around the world.

Even though Windows 8 is clearly making progress, all eyes are now on 8.1, the first major update that’s expected to be unveiled in the coming weeks and supposed to refresh Microsoft’s modern platform.

Windows 8.1 packs lots of improvements, some of which are specifically designed to improve the overall experience on touch-capable devices. A Start button will also be offered to users.
