Developer Crytek is announcing that it is working on a new CruEngine technology that no longer uses a number for identification and which is specifically designed to use the power of next-gen hardware from Microsoft and Sony, as well as new PC components.

Areil Cai, the director of business development at the company, states in the announcement, “Supplying an engine is not about delivering a static piece of software. It’s about Crytek being an R&D team for our game licensees; providing the latest, greatest technology we can, all the time.”

Speculation has previously suggested that Crytek is getting ready to abandon AAA video game development in order to focus on free-to-play titles and its engine creation.

The CryEngine name is designed to show that the team will constantly add functionality rather than simply create new numbered versions.

The company also plans to continue supporting a free CryEngine Software development kit for non-commercial users.
