Officials with the China National Space Agency (CNSA) announced their eight successful satellite launch for 2012. The Chinasat 2A spacecraft was launched to space this Saturday, May 26, aboard a Long March 3B delivery system.

The exact nature of the payload was not revealed. Chinese authorities only acknowledged that the spacecraft was a military communications satellite, but did not elaborate on its use and applications further, Space reports.

The 56.3-meter (185-foot) rocket took off from the Xichang Space Center, in Sichuan Province, at around 1536 GMT (11:56 Beijing time). It then successfully injected its payload into an oval orbit of 207 by 35,791kilometers (129 by 22,240 miles).

The main purpose of the Chinasat 2A spacecraft is “to meet the demands for China's radio and TV broadcasting and broadband multimedia transmissions,” according to officials from the Asian nation.
