Comments section on YouTube shuts down after nasty “debate” starts

A new Cheerios commercial from Saatchi & Saatchi in New York showing an interracial couple has prompted such a vile racist reaction online that the comments section for it on YouTube has been shut down.

You can see the video above and, as AdWeek notes, it’s not far from our day to day reality.

However, given that companies rarely present this side of reality in their ads (“brands are clearly scared of being perceived as making a political statement with the casting of their commercials,” the e-zine explains), this one caused a storm of nasty, racist comments.

After the ad was picked up and praised on Reddit, things really took a turn for the worst.

According to the same publication, the comments section on YouTube, which is now shut down, “devolved into an endless flame war, with references to Nazis, ‘troglodytes’ and ‘racial genocide’.”

The year is 2013, just in case you were wondering.
