The company itself unveiled this information

Canon barely launched a trio of PowerShot cameras at Photokina 2014, including the much-anticipated PowerShoot SX60 HS super Zoom camera.

The company appears to believe that PowerShots are the future, probably after taking a few cues from Sony and Panasonic.

The company introduced the G7 X last week, which is basically a lower cost Sony RX100 Mark III with improved zoom capabilities but no EVF.

Now the company has officially unveiled it is working on a new PowerShot compact camera with a large sensor, high zoom capability and a compact body that will wow everybody.

Canon says the new product will deliver “both convenience of a compact body and excellent super telephoto performance, the camera is perfect for everyday or travel shooting in high quality.”

So, is Canon working towards another RX100 competitor or is the upcoming camera a higher zoom version of the current G7 X with an even larger sensor? Your guess is as good as ours, at this point.

Canon seems to have its hands full, product-wise. In an earlier piece, I also told you that the photo gear maker might be looking to develop a mirrorless camera system with a full frame sensor. On the other hand, its biggest competitor Nikon is not taking the same road, leaving the path open for Canon.
