And here's why you should wait for a bit

During the Computex press conference held on Tuesday, Intel announced its newest, and probably last, addition to its Haswell family of CPUs: the Core i5-5675C and the Core i7-5775C, C replacing the highly regarded K suffix as being unlocked and overclockable chips.

Although these are meant to impress the audience just a bit, no one is impressed at all by these new additions while the Skylake architecture is just around the corner. And considering the tick-tock logic of Intel's CPU development flow, the new Broadwell is just the small "tick" before the greater "tock."

It's worth mentioning that there are already strong offers from Intel on the market on the existing Haswell architecture, like the i5-4690k and i7-4790k, clocked at 3.5 GHz and 4GHz respectively, that are much faster and far more overclockable right out of the box than the new C series.

Incremental increase in perfomance

But let's give credits where credits are due, the new C Broadwell series is meant to upgrade Intel's compact architecture for mobile platforms coming with integrated Iris graphics, with its Intel Iris Pro Graphics 6200 and Xeon-based Intel Pro Graphics P6300.

Keeping in mind that AMD's newly launched Carrizo notebook APU will be more gamer-oriented, Intel's new CPU C-series will cater more to a business audience, adding only incremental improvements to a series of CPUs that will reach end of the line soon.

In addition, considering Intel's latest acquisition of Altera, its FGBAs for an improved Xeon family will guarantee wider development horizons for Intel, and better products in the specialized CPUs family. But, although these are good for laptops and mobiles, they won't be able to compete with dedicated standalone platforms built for performance.

But for now, however, it is advised to wait until the long-awaited Skylake architecture will arrive later this year, which will come with the new Intel 100 chipset, DDR4 support and more PCIe lanes that will move the hardware industry forward exponentially. Together with your wallet.
