Security solutions provider Bitdefender has launched a new version of its Bitdefender Antivirus for Mac exclusively in Romania. The new version comes with a better user interface, but also with some major improvements under the hood.

The product, which will be available only in Romania for the first week after its launch, is based on a completely new scan engine that’s much faster than its predecessor, and it’s specially designed for OS X.

The scan engine is designed to have a small impact on the computer’s performance. That’s because of its selective scanning mechanism which scans only new or modified files.

This way, the antivirus steps in only when needed.

Bitdefender Antivirus for Mac relies on the TrafficLight technology to filter web traffic and protect OS X users against the threats they might encounter while surfing the web with Safari, Chrome or Firefox browsers.

Compared to older variants of the product, the new Bitdefender Antivirus for Mac also comes with an improved notifications system. Alerts are integrated into the OS’s own notification system, which makes them less intrusive and more familiar to Mac users.

The product can be tested for free for a period of 30 days.

Catalin Cosoi, chief security strategist at Bitdefender, highlights the fact that the number of threats targeting OS X computers has increased over the past years. One perfect example is the notorious Flashback, a piece of malware that has infected over 600,000 computers.

“It’s clear that the problem can’t be treatead superficially,” Cosoi noted.

Another issue with Mac computers, according to Cosoi, is that they can be utilized as a medium to transmit malware to Windows devices. Even though they’re not directly infected with malware, they can be leveraged in attacks against the networks they’re connected to.
