DICE has just released a brand new patch for its recent Battlefield 3 first person shooter on the PlayStation 3 platform, bringing a wide array of improvements, fixes and balance changes, but also the possibility to rent your own server or buy shortcut items.

Battlefield 3 came out last year and, since then, has gained a cult-like following due to its intense multiplayer mode.

Developer DICE has kept on releasing new update since then and has just deployed the latest and greatest patch on the PlayStation 3 platform.

“We are rolling out our massive PlayStation 3 game update,” the studio said. “Containing more tweaks, fixes, and additions than you can shake a stick at, the focus of this update is to make the game more stable, fairer, and more balanced. The update is live today in all territories except Japan (Japan will get this update on April 4th). Just start your game to get automatically prompted for this ~1GB update.”

Besides the patch, quite a lot of other things are now available in the game.

The first is an alternative 5-flag layout on the Wake Island map found in Battlefield 3’s Back to Karkand expansion, which should motivate players to use their strategy skills.

PS3 owners can now start renting their own servers, as the option is now available in the menu, allowing anyone to create their own customized online experiences.

The feature is currently being rolled out in phases but, once it’s fully available, anyone will be able to rent their servers for $1.49 / $6.99 / $24.99 / $64.99 (for 1, 7, 30, and 90 days).

Those with cash to spend and not a lot of time to unlock everything in Battlefield 3’s online mode will also be thrilled to hear that 10 different shortcut items are now available via the PlayStation Store, unlocking things like items for vehicles or character classes, and more.

Those who already own the Back to Karkand expansion will have to re-download it right now, as several updates were made to core files from the add-on.

Battlefield 3’s newest patch is now available on the PlayStation 3 and will soon be released for the PC and Xbox 360 platforms.
