Finnish mobile phone maker Nokia made available for download a new series of mobile applications for its devices running under Microsoft’s Windows Phone operating system.

The new apps are currently up for grabs in the Windows Phone Marketplace for the company’s Lumia 900 and Lumia 610 devices, and they will soon become available for the Lumia 800 and Lumia 710 phones as well.

These apps, including Camera Extras, Contacts Share, Counters application and Play To, were made official during Microsoft’s launch event for the upcoming Windows Phone 8 platform.

All of them are planned for availability for devices running under the next-gen OS flavor as well, but Nokia wanted to offer its users the possibility to get a taste of them before that happens.

Camera Extras includes a set of four new features aimed at providing users with a much better experience when using their phone’s camera.

Thus, they will be able to enjoy Smart Group Shot, through which one can choose the best faces from a burst, Action Shot, for capturing fast moving action shots, Panorama, and Self-timer, for those who want to take photos of themselves.

Through the new Contact Share application, owners of Lumia devices will be able to easily share contact information with friends via either SMS or email.

There is also Counters, an innovative application meant to offer monitoring options for Lumia usage, and which also provides users with the option to set up specific limits.

“This is particularly useful where you have call-time or data allowances from your operator and to make sure you do not incur extra costs,” Nokia explains.

As for Play To, it comes as the Windows Phone equivalent of Nokia’s Symbian Play to application, enabling people to easily share content with other devices in the house.

“Many of us now have several devices, such as a TVs or Blu-Ray players, connected to a network. PlayTo will allow you to share pictures, videos and music from your Lumia smartphone to other DLNA–enabled devices on your network,” the company explains.

Today, Lumia 900 and Lumia 610 owners around the world can head over to the Windows Phone Marketplace to download the new Play To application.

Camera Extras arrived in the Marketplace for US and China and will enjoy global availability in July. Contact Share and Counters already landed in the Marketplace for China, and are planned for worldwide availability by July.

“Each will bring new great functions and enhance your Lumia smartphone experience,” Nokia said. “The new Nokia apps will be available starting this week in a phased approach, so you might have to be a little patient. However, we’re sure that they’re worth waiting for!”
