Apple has launched a new software update for second-generation Apple TV owners in tandem with the release of iOS 4.3 for iPhones, iPads, and iPod touch devices. Labeled as iOS 4.2, the IPSW software file actually designates the update as version 4.3.

The enhancements in iOS 4.2 for Apple TV 2G are disclosed by Apple in a tech note over at the company’s Support website. The Cupertino giant first of all mentions AirPlay for apps and websites.

However, the flagship additions are MLB.TV; NBA Game Time; Netflix Dolby Digital 5.1.

Other newbies include new slideshow themes, the Improved on-screen keyboard, AirPlay photo slideshow themes, HDMI color mode, and Connectivity and performance fixes.

Weighing in on each new addition in particular, Apple reveals that owners of its set-top box will now be able to wirelessly stream video from iOS apps and websites that are enabled for AirPlay, on an iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. On the portable end, users must be running iOS 4.3 to have the feature work.

“Watch live and on-demand Major League Baseball games in HD with an MLB.TV subscription,” reads Apple’s description for the MLB.TV addition.

Some users have already taken to the Apple Discussions forums to complain that they didn’t need this sitting at the top of their ‘internet’ list. “I'd have hoped they would have fixed the movie and tv show listings issues before giving us guys baseball,” a user identifying himself as Winston Churchill wrote.

Those who do appreciate the new addition will be happy to learn that they will be able to “Pause, rewind, fast-forward, and switch between the home and away broadcast,” according to Apple’s technical note.

Furthermore, the Mac maker is allowing non-subscribers to access real-time MLB scores and in-game stats, as well as the ability to see the full-season schedule, standings, and stats.
