The world of computer protection software is about to expand with one product. Helix is its name and its field of activity is protection against computer viruses. The developer is Lavasoft, the creator of the world's most popular anti-spyware software, Ad-Aware.

Anti-Virus Helix comes with a 30-day trial period that provides full updates of the product. Like all anti-virus pieces of software on the market should, the application starts protecting your system from the moment Windows loads and monitors all the alternate ways a nasty may take in order to gain access to your computer. This roughly translates into the fact that Helix is up for the job in the case of rootkits and prevents email virus attacks as well as online ones by constantly scanning Internet traffic.

Handling the application should not be a burden, regardless of the type of user managing the software, as it comes with a very simple to use interface that gives you access to protection areas such as Local Protection and Online Protection. Additionally, you can view the current protection status.

Helix's flexibility extends to the point where you are given the possibility to create scan profiles. The advantage of this feature consists in the fact that you get to define specific areas to be checked out by the anti-virus.

Web surfing is a paramount activity when it comes to computers and Helix is equipped with the components to keep you safe from phishing or malware floating on the Internet. More than this, the mail checking component examines incoming/outgoing mails for any type of threats that may affect the stability of the receiver's machine.

To make it all as easy as possible, the configuration section of the application permits defining an automatic action to be taken when malware is encountered. This is available for all protection modules included in the software: Scanner, Guard, MailGuard and WebGuard.

Also, each of the aforementioned modules comes with heuristics engine designed to pick up the threats outside Helix's signature database. You can enable macrovirus heuristics as well as set the Win32 file heuristics level to one of the three detection levels – high, medium or low.

To ensure user's settings, Helix is equipped with password protection, which can be enabled on different areas. Thus everything from activation/deactivation of protection modules, tampering with quarantined files and even installation/uninstallation of the app can be defended by a user defined password.

The Configuration panel comes with two modes: simple and expert. The difference between the two is that Simple mode supplies the settings only for Scanner and Guard while Expert boasts settings for all components of the application.

Regarding the power of Helix, you can verify it by simply accessing its Detection List under Extras menu. It gives all forms of malware currently detected by the anti-virus and also lets you search for a specific threat.

Helix anti-virus is a new player on the anti-virus market and has pretty good chances to become a users' favorite given the ease of use and extensive protection it offers. Take a look at the image gallery below to see what it is all about.
