Nokia have upgraded their Nokia Maps service with the introduction of the Assisted GPS (A-GPS). Users will now have the possibility of receiving faster and more reliable results for their position and for the best way to reach a certain destination.

Nokia plans to put this technology in all its future devices which come with built-in GPS. Current owners of Nokia N95 handsets have the possibility of benefiting from this new service, by using the Nokia Software Updater. With this, they will simply upgrade their phones to the latest version of the software.

"Consumers now have the comfort of quick fix times which create a better navigation experience when using Nokia Maps", said Ralph Eric Kunz, vice-president, multimedia experiences, Nokia. Advantages are worthy of being taken into consideration. "By decreasing the time wasted while you wait for a first fix, we are increasing the enjoyment that Nokia Maps provides", Ralph Eric Kunz further comments.

Nokia has already started shipments of the 6110 Navigator, one of the first devices to use A-GPS. The service works with a technical framework which makes it possible for third parties to provide their own regional A-GPS service. This means that service providers will add information and fix errors any time this is needed.

The A-GPS service comes as part of Nokia's high interest for devices equipped with such capabilities. The Finnish company has recently declared that they are looking to include this feature in most of their devices from now on.

The Nokia Software Updater is the solution for owners of Nokia N95 handsets to benefit from A-GPS without having to purchase any additional software. This free PC application has been used for more than 2 million times until now in order to update Nokia devices since it has been introduced almost a year ago.
