Intel began manufacturing chips using the 65 nanometer process at a production site in Arizona, USA. This is the second factory in USA that produces this kind of chips.

The company announced in October that it began shipping Presler, a dual-core processor made in the 65 nanometer process, to the
PC manufacturers. These chips are manufactured at a D1D factory in Oregon, USA. With the chips produced in the Arizona factory, the volume of 65nm chips on the market will substantially rise.

Intel will begin producing 65nm chips in factories in Ireland and New Mexico from 2006. After the third quarter of 2006, more chips will be produced using the 65nm process than the actual technology of 90 nanometers.

Although chip designs and new transistor concepts are in the media spotlight, semiconductor producers live only through the manufacturing process, Intel being one of those companies.

The chips available now are produced through the 90 nanometers process. Changing to the 65nm technology reduces the production costs and raises the performance.

A nanometer, derived from the Greek word "nano", represents the billionth part of a meter. A human hair measures about 90,000 nanometers in diameter.
